Chapter One: Introduction
1.1 Background of the Study
Cultural festivals serve as powerful mediums for fostering community engagement, preserving heritage, and promoting social cohesion. The Argungu Fishing Festival, a globally recognized cultural event in Argungu Local Government Area, Kebbi State, exemplifies the significance of festivals in uniting diverse groups through shared traditions. These events create platforms for showcasing local culture, encouraging economic activity, and strengthening social bonds among participants. In addition to their entertainment value, cultural festivals serve as tools for education, advocacy, and tourism promotion, attracting visitors and investments to host communities. Scholars have noted that well-organized festivals contribute to a sense of identity, pride, and collective memory while also addressing contemporary issues such as youth engagement and intergenerational dialogue (Usman & Bala, 2023; Ibrahim et al., 2024). However, challenges such as inadequate funding, limited infrastructure, and cultural dilution pose threats to the sustainability and impact of these festivals. This study explores the role of cultural festivals in enhancing community engagement, focusing on their social, economic, and cultural dimensions in Argungu LGA.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
Despite the recognized importance of cultural festivals in fostering community engagement, many such events in Argungu LGA face challenges that hinder their full potential. Issues such as inconsistent funding, lack of proper planning, and limited participation from certain demographics, including women and youth, reduce the inclusivity and impact of these festivals. Furthermore, the commercialization of cultural festivals sometimes leads to the neglect of traditional values, diminishing their authenticity and community appeal. This study aims to examine the role of cultural festivals in enhancing community engagement, identifying strategies to maximize their benefits while addressing existing challenges in Argungu LGA.
